fruit season

I thought maybe a new template would get me all fired up to post again...we'll see. We're getting into the swing of fruit/veggie season and am trying to figure out the best way to try to preserve all this good local bounty. I have to learn to can or buy a freezer as far as I can tell. Freezing seems much easier but then you have to plug that sucker in all year. Does anyone have tips or personal experience with canning vs. freezing?

I'm so jealous! We just don't get the same stuff up here. How about mailing us some ;)

The fruit really is a luxury that I don't take for granted yet - maybe that's why I'm so excited to preserve some. We bought the freezer instead of learning about canning. I prefer the taste, it's easier, and I figure that the extra power we'll end up using with the freezer pales in comparison to the cost of trucking in fresh fruit all year from some foreign country.

Perhaps I can pass on some of my raspberry jam next time you're in town!

Tannis, that raspberry jam is delicious. Thanks for sharing both the product and the chance to do an intergenerational jamming session. Ivy and Ella are quite the helpers with healthy appetites for fresh fruit as they work smushing the fruit! Experiment on! Mom

Heather I've also thought about the ramifications of botulism...I'd love to try to make my own salsa but think I might settle for drying peppers and maybe freezing tomtoes and learning to make "fresh" salsa with those. I'm trying to figure out what my priorities are as far as which foods make the most sense to preserve because I can only take on a few projects a summer (at this stage of life anyway). Maybe a cruise through the Penticton farmer's market this weekend will inspire me.
